Vacation Book Ideas

Jobina and I are just over a month away from going to Belize and it's time I start thinking about packing. Yup, I need to bring some books along. Any suggestions? I don't care if it's fiction or non-fiction, classics or new stuff, but if you have any suggestions of books that you simply loved when you read them please let me know. Also, if you have a moment, please tell what you liked about it/them. I look forward to wiling away long hours reading in a hammock and enjoying the tropical breezes. Thanks!

If you're looking for something funny that'll make you think, check out "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff". It's a fictional account of the "missing years" of Christ's life, told from the point of view of his best friend, Levi bar Biff. It does have a little bit of language but the book is seriously laugh out loud funny.

If you want an Iron Man fix, I can recommend a couple of Iron Man novels by Greg Cox if you like. :)

Hey Jay, a graphic novel sounds fun. Which ones would you recommend? Also, any books?

My brother-in-law is currently really enjoying a book by Vox Day called 'The Irrational Atheist'...I actually thought of you earlier last week when he recommended it to Tim as good read.
'Dissecting the Unholy Trinity of Dawkins, Harris and Hitchens' is the description on the front of the book (may be too heavy for a holiday though!)
You can find the book at www.benbellabooks.com

you're going to belize, and you need some ideas for books to read, i'd rather suggest some places to see and people to meet. go snorkeling in the caribbean, check out lamanai ruins, meet the mennonites in oil rich spanish lookout or take a horse and buggy ride in shipyard. or you could go to indian creek and see the papaya farms and pick and eat some fresh papaya. you could go to chan chich gallon jug for a night, on the way you'd there you're bound to see animals you wouldn't expect and once you're there the monkeys and turkeys in the resort will entertain you. oh and don't forget to stop over and say hi to my grama for me in blue creek. <>< <>< cynthia teigrob

I wasn't suggesting graphic novels; the two books I referenced are actual novels. My first suggestion is also a novel.

Cynthia: Nice to hear from you! Thanks for the suggestions on places to see. Actually, we might be able to hi to your grandma, I think we are going on a cave swim in Blue Creek. Have you been there before?

Jay: sorry I didn't realize they were novels. I will look into them! I'm kind of surprised though, how come I haven't got more suggestions from people. Has no one read any good books recently? Help me out here people!

If I can find them (they're packed up somewhere until I get another book shelf) you're welcome to borrow them.

OK, you asked for it!

These are books I've been reading:

Raw Family by Boutenko Family
Serious health issues led this family to discover the benefits of a 100% living food diet. Raw food in other words. Quick read.

Putting a Face on Grace by Richard Blackaby
This was a refreshing look at what the grace of God did for me and how it permeates my life.

Letters From A Sceptic by Dr. Gregory A. Boyd
Just got this so have not read it yet. It is a book of letters between a father and son. The father is the skeptic. There' lots of controversy about this book so I have to read it and see for myself!

One Smooth Stone by Marcia Lee Laycock
Just bought this too and haven't read it yet. It's a novel and she is a Canadian writer. She was the winner of the 2006 Best New Canadian Author Award.

One Woman Against the Reich by Helmut W. Ziefle
A true story about Maria Ziefle's struggle to raise her children free from the hate-filled grip of the Nazi regime.

A New Kind of Normal by Carol Kent
Her own story about unexpected changes in her life including a son who kills his step-children's father,
and how she deals with all that.

The Wisdom of Menopause - Well, I just DARE you to read that!!!!!

Thanks Mom for those ideas! I must admit though that the "Wisdom of Menopause" is probably not one that I will be taking with me though!

Wow,I have to admit that I am sad that I have gotten so few ideas for books (thanks to those of you who did make suggestions though!). I was thinking about this and it occurred to me that maybe the problem is that people aren't reading books any more. Seriously, if people ask me for a book recommendation I can list off at least 5 or 10 right off the bat. Is nobody reading anymore?

Sorry for the delayed response... I was busy reading real books instead of blogs this week :)

A few that I've enjoyed recently - no idea what your own tastes encompass!

The Shock Doctrine
(Naomi Klein)
- I read this one on our trip to Greece last year, and I loved how it made me think.

Velvet Elvis
(Rob Bell)
- If you haven't read this one yet, you MUST.

I Am America (and so can you!)
(Stephen Colbert)
- Ridiculously funny... and easy to read in little pieces, which is good when you're travelling.

I've also been digging Michael Connelly lately, for absolutely brainless paperback mystery reads - if that's something you might be n the market for.

Good luck choosing! I absolutely love picking books for trips...
