Blog Feedback: Suggestions Wanted

According to Blogger, this will be my 138th post! I started this blog as an experiment to share my thoughts on whatever I found interesting and enlightening. I suppose it has kind of evolved; not only is it about ideas but it's also become a personal journal and record of my adventures in life. It's also a daily discipline. When I first started it I wanted it to be pure, I would write what I wanted and I wouldn't care what anyone else thought. Lately I've really appreciated the conversations and interaction with others that I've been able to have and now consider my readers to be an integral part of the blog. Thank you! And on that note . . .

I've been thinking about changes to the look and content of Random Enlightenment. But I'm curious. Whether you are a regular reader or this is your first time stopping by, I'm wondering how you experience this site:

What do you like and not like?
What were your favorite and least favorite posts?
What would you like to hear/see more of?
What did you appreciate? Has anything impacted you?
What annoyed you? What doesn't work for you?
What would you do to improve the look of the site?
Any other suggestions?

Be as honest as you wish, I take rejection well! As a bonus, for everyone who comments, I'll put you in a draw for a prize (your choice of either Mark Twain's "Roughing It" or box of 12 packs of Excel gum). I'll hold the draw next Wednesday morning.

May Light increase!

OK - you, Mark Westman, are a brave man - I will say that first of all. And because of that, I will comment and give my opinions. It is always fun to hear other people's input. Anyways...
What do you like and not like? I like how you comment on pretty much anything - it gives me insight into you and your thought processes.
What were your favorite and least favorite posts? Not sure, though I get a little bored of the psychology ones - though I know that is what you are taking and you are just sharing. I think what I don't like about them is that you are writing about what you are learning, but it feels like this one person's opinion is the only opinion and that is what comes out in your post.
What would you like to hear/see more of? Your thoughts as a husband and father - I always love it when people's feelings come through. I love reading about your love for Jobina, Riker and Trinity! I also love yours and Jobina's back and forth in the comments! :) Makes me smile every time. I wish Michael had a blog so I could comment on his!
What did you appreciate? Has anything impacted you? Oh goodness... I can't remember. I knwo you have made me think about things and I have talked to Michael about them, just can't think of it off the top of my head. Sorry Mark - I'll comment again if I think of it.
What annoyed you? What doesn't work for you? OK, this has annoyed me all along and because you said that you can take it... I dislike the way to seem to have an opinion of things that you state very strongly at times and it seems to be the only opinion that there can be in your mind. You even argue with people in the comments, and I can't help thinking sometimes - does it really matter if I think the same way? Reminds me of getting into debates at Bible school! :)
Also, I really like your tagline "May Light increase!" but do you really need to put it on every post - i.e. the Mac ones? Where is the "Light" you want to increase there? Oh, wait a minute, I am talking to a Mac lover - forget I said Mac ones, which other ones could I use as an example, let's see... the Hummer vs. Hybrid car one. There, that's a good example. :)
What would you do to improve the look of the site? I might try a different color - I do really like the simplicity, but change is nice sometimes. Maybe a masthead that has a flame burning or something as well. Just thoughts.
Any other suggestions? Not really. Hope that my thoughts are helpful and not at all hurtful - I wasn't trying to be, just trying to be honest. Wow, don't think I'd ever have the nerve to do this on my blog. I am looking forward to seeing what changes you may or may not implement in the future. Remember though Mark that this is YOUR blog and you should do whatever you want!

Alright Mark, because you're my friend, I will answer your quiz. :)

What do you like and not like?

I like that you update often. I don't like all the advertising, but as you're a student trying to get by supporting a family, I let it go.

What were your favorite and least favorite posts?

Nothing really stands out either way.

What would you like to hear/see more of?

I enjoy the posts about you and your family the most.

What did you appreciate? Has anything impacted you?

I'm not sure if I've really been impacted...I've managed to get a couple of make-up oppression cracks in on Sarah... :) (though I think women's shoes are more oppressive than make-up :))

What annoyed you? What doesn't work for you?

As I said, the advertising, as it bothers me how commercialized society is these days. But again, as I said, you're a student raising a family so I do no begrudge you making a few bucks from your blog.

What would you do to improve the look of the site?

I'd go with a purple background with pink polka dots...if you're man enough.

Any other suggestions?

Convince Blogger to allow capital letters when you type your name! I hate how it's all lower case. :)

Mark, I don't know if you are brave or just foolish - " Caution is the better part of valour"- for soliciting feedback on your blogs but because I read it every day and enjoy it immensely, here goes.
What do I like/not like?
I like your self-deprecating humour, your observations and insights on the spiritual life and the musings on the mundane.
I don't like urban legends passed off as verifiable science.( Hummer vs Prius) The CNW "study" has been thoroughly discredited.
I don't like "then" being substituted for "than". A bit of nitpicking, granted, but there it is!
I liked the brainstorming post and hated the Hummer post.
I'd like to see some political comment. That ought to get you comments!
Your devotion to your wife and kids impresses me!
What annoyed me? The Hummer story.
Your site looks clean and is easy to read. I don't know that I'd change anything.
Just keep'em coming!

Hey Mark,
I'm gonna be lazy and just say that I really enjoy your blog. period. Change it if you feel like it, but otherwise just keep pumpin' out more of the same!

Hey Mark- Tim and I always enjoy your insights from your school studies, and they leave us with lots to talk about!
I read the other responses and I feel quite differently than Rayna who wrote that she "dislike the way to seem to have an opinion of things that you state very strongly at times and it seems to be the only opinion that there can be in your mind. You even argue with people in the comments, and I can't help thinking sometimes - does it really matter if I think the same way?"
I really like how you are willing to engage with someone who comments on your post and it doesn't seem like "arguing" to me. Kind of funny that we all see things so differently, hey? I most appreciate how well you present whichever idea/opinion/belief etc you are sharing, and then how well you follow up on comments people make.

Hey Melissa, nice to hear from you! Hope you guys are doing well. I just saw this commercial for Nanaimo (spelt right) yesterday and thought, wow, I'd love to go there - maybe even live there! Nice coincidence that you left a comment soon after! It's minus 25 here some days, I'm guessing it's much nicer where you are? Tim left an invitation for us to "stop by" sometime and I have thought about how much fun it would be to surprise you someday!

It's nice to hear that you two are enjoying my blog and thanks so much for the encouragement. I suppose I do present my own opinions strongly sometime, but as you said, I like to think that I'm open to changing my ideas, but I have to be convinced first! The whole idea of this blog is to present ideas and to play around with them (testing, challenging, agreeing, tweaking, etc). Perhaps not everyone is comfortable with this! As long as things remain respectful, I like a good discussion. Take care!
